NAVI
NAVI stands for Neurodivergent and Vision Impairment. This acronym refers to the assistive features we are developing to support individuals facing challenges related to neurodivergence and vision impairment.

Neurodivergent
Neurodivergent individuals are those whose cognitive functioning is not considered typical. This includes people with conditions such as Autism, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and Dyscalculia.

Dyslexia
Dyslexia is defined federally as "an unexpected difficulty in reading for an individual who has the intelligence to be a much better reader." It is a common condition, affecting approximately 20% of the population worldwide, regardless of gender.

Dysgraphia
Dysgraphia, on the other hand, is a neurological disorder characterized by difficulties in writing. It causes distortions or inaccuracies in a person's handwriting. In children, this disorder typically emerges when they are first introduced to writing.

Dyscalculia
Dyscalculia is a learning disorder that impairs a person's mathematical abilities. Similar to dyslexia affecting reading-related brain areas, dyscalculia affects the brain regions responsible for math and number skills.

It is important to note that Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Dyscalculia can affect individuals of all ages, including students, children, and adult learners. It is highly likely that you, your child, relative, friend, or student may experience one or more of these learning disorders.

Symptoms
We strongly advise consulting with your physician or a specialist if you suspect that you or someone close to you is experiencing symptoms of a learning disorder. Although there is no known cure for Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, or Dyscalculia, early assessment and intervention have proven to yield the most favorable results. It is not uncommon for learning disorders to go undiagnosed for years and only be recognized in adulthood. However, it is never too late to seek assistance and support.

Some symptoms include:
1. Slow reading (below the expected level for age)
2. Difficulty spelling
3. Difficulty finding the right word
4. Word jumping
5. Jumbled letters in words or digits in numbers
6. Difficulty following a line or staying within margins
7. Difficulty forming answers to questions
8. Difficulty organizing or articulating thoughts on paper

This is not an exhaustive list. There are more comprehensive lists of symptoms available online.

Vision Impairment and Learning

Vision impairment
Vision impairment is a term used by experts to encompass various degrees of vision loss, ranging from complete blindness to partial vision loss.

Low vision
Low vision refers to a reduction in visual acuity while still retaining some level of vision. This term is applicable to individuals who, despite wearing glasses or contact lenses, are unable to read a newspaper at a normal viewing distance. People with low vision often require adaptations in lighting or enlarged print to facilitate reading.

The Impact of Vision on Learning
It is important to recognize that correctable vision disorders can contribute to attention problems and behavioral issues. However, it is reassuring to know that these problems can be addressed through appropriate correction. Early detection of vision issues is crucial in minimizing the challenges faced by your child.

Surprisingly, more than 60 percent of children with learning difficulties have vision disorders that are not easily detectable through standard vision screenings. Therefore, we strongly recommend consulting with a physician or specialist if you suspect that you or someone close to you is exhibiting symptoms of a learning or vision disorder.

It is disheartening to note that preventable vision impairment affects a staggering one billion people worldwide. Even more concerning is the fact that over three-quarters of those with vision impairment could have avoided it. This data underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to address and prevent vision impairment.

It is imperative to approach vision impairment and its impact on learning with a sense of urgency and vigilance. By seeking professional guidance and taking appropriate steps, we can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals with vision disorders and ensure a brighter future for them.
